Some thoughts on aespa’s Lollapalooza set 2 August 2026 which I just watched live on the Disney+/Hulu channel 1 stream, and then rewatched a second time in it’s entirety.
The first time I watched/listened on my main computer on a large screen and with multiple speakers at high volume. The second time I watched/listened on one my phone (iPhone 16 Pro Max) at max phone volume.
I tweeted in real time (@Eric_John) mini comments while watching the first time.
Here is a more coherent summary.

I am always happiest with aespa when they lean in to the harder rock-based sound, and they certainly did that here. So I was very pleased with that.
From the intro music through “Can’t Help Myself” the rock group aspect was particularly strong. Reworking “Next Level” as super hard rock was extremely great. And rock version “Rich Man” was very very strong.
I’ve seen aespa live five times in person now. Two of them were short sets at Krazy Super Koncert, one was a series of medium length sets at SM Town, one was a short performance at the Billboard Woman in Music Awards, and one was a full concert at the Kia Forum on the last North American tour (1 Feburary 2025 SYNK: PARALLEL LINE tour).
And of course I saw the concert movie (aespa: World Tour In Cinemas) twice in the theatre before that.
The four sets-in-the-midst-of-other-events all had a certain sameness to them in that phase; I could talk about the SYNK: PARALLEL LINE show at length but the relevant bit here is none of the times that I’ve seen them so far have lived up to the concert movie. As great as they all were, I was always left wanting more one way or another.
The biggest issue for my on SYNK: PARALLEL LINE was the lack of a live band, so hopefully the strong, dominant presence of the live band here means that has been fixed, and let’s make that permanent please. It is SO much better.
The issue in all the short sets at the events that weren’t their own tour, was in that era there was a sameness to the setlist and performances…. the Lollapalooza set solved that too, including creative and band-oriented arrangements of songs that gave them a fresh new vibe.
“Supernova” especially but also “Armageddon” and “Whiplash” definitely got a new freshness that was more than welcome.
They obviously were leaning heavily on the new material, performing many of the Lemonade album songs live for the first time. (See my album initial review here -> https://ericjohnmusic.com/546-2/)
I’m a bit surprised they didn’t attempt “Camouflage” though as my review said, it’s a deceptively fast and difficult song to sing. And “Til We Die” would have been rousing. I guess I will have to wait until the 3 October 2026 LIVE TOUR – SYNK : COMPLæXITY at Intuit Dome for that.
And that’s always the thing, isn’t it? What songs do you include? (As you know I think “Girls” should always be mandatory and “Drama” should always be skipped – making me a minority of MY but I care not 🙂
In the sentimental aespa songs category there are many I would choose over “To The Girls” (“Til We Meet Again”, “ICU”,…. the list goes on) but here just put “Live My Life” in, keep the energy up and be done with it. They already took a breath on a naked arrangement of “Bubble”.
But these are quibbles. Especially on listening the through the second time, the show was killer. End to end. And the unexpected choices made repeat viewing/listening richer and gave new aespa live experiences, so it’s all good.
There were amusingly awkward and shy in their ment’s as they tend to be, although not as much as on the last tour when I saw them. Also the live stream clearly indicated how hard they work, as their effort to extend one of the ment’s for no purpose except to try to catch their breath was apparent.
aespa’s performances are so physically demanding it’s definitely something that must put a cap on the number of songs / length of concerts unless you really do a miraculous job of pacing planning – the right videos, the right solos, the alternating energy,….. but they put out both vocally and dance wise at a higher level (a “Next Level” if you will lol) so definitely the physical challenge is real.
As I discussed a lot on twitter, the (very) live vocals combined with how high they turned up the vocals versus the band in the mix was quite a daring choice for a festival setting. They pulled it off, and with that dancing, wow.
You could really tell at high volume when I was listening to it with multiple speakers. Like NingNing missed the initial cue track on “To The Girls” and came in late, and Giselle’s mic went to hell on “To The Girls” also (it went way quiet) and they didn’t fix it at all until mid way through “Armageddon” and then fully after the dance break by the time of “WDA”. But these mistakes only made it more obvious how live it was.
Oddly it sounds better more flattened on the phone than with all the speakers. Who knows why – they are pulling a live feed in a festival setting, probably running the sound off some mix at the sound board I would imagine, not exactly optimal conditions. The phone version of the full show sounds great.
This definitely makes me very exciting for 3 October, I just hope they bring this band…. and play “Girls” FFS. Winter guitar and everything 🙂
